A fitness instructor from Texas just happened to be in New Jersey on July 30th, 2011 when a car going 50 miles an hour crashed into a jewelry store. The man jumped in the car took the woman's foot off the accelerator and turned off the engine. He carried the woman out of the car then noticed another woman pinned under the car. He pulled her out, bound the cuts on her wrists, and told her to hold her arms up to reduce the loss of blood until paramedics got there. He received a hero proclamation from Evesham Township.
Wow, talk about being in the right place at the right time. This man was all the way from Texas and "just happened" to be in that store at that time. Its great that he was there otherwise these two woman might have died. Normally in an incident like this people panic, freeze, are basically in shock that these things are even happening. For him to have reacted that calmly and quickly is just amazing to me. At the end of the article it says that the jewelry store gave the man an engraved watch that said "to our hero", how cool is that. I guarantee you that this man and all witnesses and victims will never forget this day or how great they all felt afterwards, knowing that he saved all of them. Its always nice to hear real-life stories like this, these days there are not too many stories that have truely happy endings like this one did.

Illegal to sell guns to medical marijuana users
In Helena, Montana the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued a warning letter that it is illegal to sell firearms to medical marijuana users. Marijuana and Gun-Rights groups say that this takes away their Second Amendment rights; however, federal law states that "it is illegal for anyone who is an unlawful user of, or is addicted to marijuana or any controlled substances." So legally this does cover medical marijuana users.
I totally agree with this article. Just because they think they are not endangering society by smoking marijuana and carrying a gun doesn't mean anything. The human mind works so differently when someone is taking drugs, legally or illegally. We already have enough drug dealers/users and gang members that walk or drive around under the influence while carrying a firearm, not saying that these people are anything like that, but authorities already have a hard enough time trying to keep those people off the streets, they shouldn't have to worry about these people as well. I used to live in Montana and it kind of freaked me out that it was okay for people to walk around in public with guns on them, I cannot even imagine how much more freaked out I would have been if all of those people had been high.

Coffee can cut depression risk in women
Studies have found that women who drink two to three cups of coffee a day may have a lower risk of depression. Newer studies even suggest that coffee drinking may also lower risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer and stroke. One statistic found in this study was that women who consume four or more cups of coffee in a day have a twenty percent lower risk of developing depression. However, assistant professor of psychiatry urges caution to this study. She says that the women in the study were nurses and that drinking caffeine puts people in a better mood anyway.
I liked this article because it starts out that they think they have found something useful health wise in coffee, but then as you read on it tells you to take caution to the study because it could just be the natural side-effects of caffeine. I can see both sides to this, on one hand other good things have just been found out about coffee consumption; however, caffeine does put people in a better mood. On top of all that, caffeine is addicting anyway, why would they say things like this if they aren't really sure that that's what it really does? We have all these newly discovered foods and such that reduce the risk of different diseases but sometimes I wonder if they really know for sure, or do they just do a bunch of surveys and decide between connections? I can't really say whether I do or don't agree with this topic. In the future they might find out that consuming too much of any of these things can lead to worse things, or maybe they will turn out to be right and will have saved hundreds of live by putting out news articles like this. As you can see I am totally on the fence about this one. I just kept thinking of something that my mother used to tell me while reading this, "believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see."

cantaloupe listeria outbreak
People in Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have died due to an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe. Thirty-five others have been sickened by the disease in other states such as: California, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, Texas, and West Virginia. The cantaloupe crop with listeria found in it was traced back to Jensen Farm in Denver Colorado. Jensen Farm and the FDA have recalled the cantaloupes and suggest that anyone who believes they may have gotten produce from this farm to discard it immediately.
This is pretty scary to me because this is a type of bacteria that grows rapidly and may have already contaminated other foods in peoples' refrigerators. My family consumes a large amount of fresh fruits and veggies each month, so it concerns me that my child my get extremely sick. It doesn't normally have an ill effect on adults but does on those with weak immune systems. I wonder how many lawsuits will be pressed against the Jensen farm by the families of the deceased? If they can take samples from farms to detect things like this, why don't they do it before its shipped out all across the country? It would prevent things like this from happening in the future. They should do this to all food products that are shipped anywhere like beef, pork, lamb, fish, poultry, fruits, veggies, dairy, etc. It would make me and my family feel a lot safer knowing that the food we eat is 100% free of bacteria and disease.

Pumpkin Found Hanging In Pear Tree
Fifty miles outside of Des Moines, Iowa a pear tree in a couple's garden appears to be growing a pumpkin. When inspected it was discovered that a nearby pumpkin vine had grown up the tree causing the pumpkin to appear to be growing from the tree. No one has ever seen anything like this and random passersby have stopped by this garden to witness the phenomenon. The pumpkin was discovered on labor day and the gardeners are hoping that it stays in the tree until it turns orange, just in time for Halloween. The Des Moines television station KCCI covered this story.
Its crazy how mother-nature works, no one would have ever expected something like this to happen. Its crazy that a fruit as heavy as a pumpkin could manage to grow up in a tree. I would think that when its ripe it would fall and burst into ruins on the ground below, I hope not for the gardeners' sake. Maybe they can find a way to unwind the vine from the tree when the pumpkin starts to get to heavy, and maybe it will be one of those special pumpkins that grows to be enormous. Its also pretty neat that this happened just in time for the holidays where pumpkins are used such as Halloween and Thanksgiving. I would be very proud of my garden if I were these people to have something so extraordinary happen to their crops. I would definitely want to show it off to the world like they did. Then again they might not get as much publicity as others have in the past for unusual plant or crop growth, which is sad because I feel this story is just as amazing as the rest of them.

More Kids Visiting Hospitals for Ingesting Parents Meds
In children 5 and younger in the U.S. there has been a 36 percent increase in hospital admissions, and a 28 percent increase in emergency room visits for accidental ingestion of prescription medication for adults. The majority of these increases is due to children finding the medicine and taking it on their own as opposed to bad judgement on doses. The best explanation for these increases would likely be the rise in the number of medication prescribed to adults who have children in their household. The most common drug found in the system of young children at these hospital visits are prescription opioid painkillers.
How scary is this!? For accidents like this to be happening more and more over the years signifies that our adult population is getting lazy with keeping hazardous items out of childrens' reach. You would think that adults would be smart enough to keep prescription medication in a secure location whether its locked in a cabinet or hidden way up high to where it is impossible for these small children to reach. Also the only reason there is a "rise in the number of medication prescribed to adults" is because they have a "pill" for everything these days, and I believe that a lot of these medications are way to easy for adults to get. I have heard of people going in and complaining about symptoms that they don't really have and walking out of the doctors office with two or more prescriptions. Its ridiculous, I think that doctors should run better tests on patients to ensure the reality of the diagnosis. As for those adults who actually need these medications, just keep them in much safer places, because in my opinion it is way more important to have these out of children's hands and mouths than it is for them to be easily reached by adults.

Citizens Save Biker Trapped in Fiery Crash
In Logan, Utah a handful of bystanders teamed up to lift a burning car and rescue a man from underneath it. A BMW hit a motorcycle trapping the biker underneath the car and causing the bike to burst into flames. One of the citizens called 911 and Sargent Jason Olsen was the first officer on the scene. In the video you see a young woman checking on the man, 21 year old Brandon Wright, under the car. Once they realize he is still breathing they proceed to form a large group and lift the car off of the man and drag him out. You then see Sgt. Olsen tell everyone to back away from the man and the fire, then the paramedics tend to the wounded man who eventually responds.
Watching this video and reading about these random people saving a man trapped in a life or death situation brought tears to my eyes and warmed my heart. It is awesome to know that people do care about others without even having to know them. It was just human nature kicking in I am sure, but it is still an amazing thing. In the article the people said they weren't even thinking about their own safety, they never thought about an explosion occurring while rescuing this man, they just knew they had to help this young man and give him a second chance at life. If these people had not been where they were when they were this man probably would have died. I cannot even begin to imagine how fretful this man and his family are. I hope this brings more people to realize that they can and should help others in their time of need. I believe in karma and these brave people will be rewarded in their futures. I also believe that everything happens for a reason, and that car did not blow up because these people and that man were meant to have a second chance. God bless these people and may the whole world know how heroic they were on this day.

NYPD Cops Caught Dirty Dancing on Video
At the West Indian Day Parade NY cops were caught dirty dancing with female dancers performing in the parade. A video of the incident surfaced on YouTube shortly after it was taken. Officials are looking into it but no word of any disciplinary action has been announced. In the video you see one of the women come up and start grinding on one officer who starts to get into it, then you see other officers getting a little too "down and dirty" with other female dancers. Their commanding officer says that over the years he has seen the men in blue get into the spirit of the parade, but he claims that this is taking it too far. Two shootings were reported during the parade, it is not yet evident that these shootings were close to where the dancing occurred. Some NY citizens think that the officers should be punished for not doing their jobs, but others think that it was ok for them to have fun and still do their jobs considering the women in the parade started dancing on the officers first.
If you watch this video you can see that the women did indeed start dancing on the officers first, however in my opinion the officers should not have engaged in this kind of behavior. They should have just ignored the dancers and gone about their duties of watching to crowd. Had they been doing their job correctly they would have heard the reports of the shootings and gone to investigate. A murderer probably got away all because these cops were participating in the "festivities". I wonder what the families of these men thought when they saw the video, their behavior is honestly disgusting and I would be very ashamed of my husband/father/brother for doing such a thing while on duty. I understand that sometimes it is ok for these men to let loose and have fun because their jobs are very stressful, but there is a time and a place where it is appropriate and this just was not it. I don't think they should loose their jobs over this situation but they should be punished in a way to let them know that this behavior is unacceptable. I also believe the video should be taken off of YouTube. They have most likely had their fair share of embarrassment. They don't need this video haunting them for the rest of their lives. I'm sure that after these officers saw themselves on this video they regretted ever doing such a thing. Not everyone actually enjoys making a fool out of themselves.

Youngster Drives Down Busy City Streets
In Beijing a young girl about 4-5 years old drives down the street in the busy early morning traffic. Whats worse is that two adults are in the car and one of them, the woman, is even filming it. This tape was posted on the popular Chinese website called youku, and there has been major controversy about it. At the beginning of the video you can hear the woman speaking, telling the little girl to drive carefully. A little later on the young girl is mentioning how the flowers are starting to bloom, and the male adult in the back seat tells her to drive safely and pay attention to the road. At the end of the video it shows the man get out of the backseat and remove extension pedals from the driver seat, which explains how the little girl managed to reach the pedals in the first place.
Who on earth lets their child, that young, drive, let alone down what appears to be a busy highway. Obviously Beijing doesn't have very many cops out at 7 in the morning or these two "adults" would be sitting in a Chinese jail where they deserve to be. Do these parents not care about the safety of their child, or themselves for that matter? I don't care how good of a driver this little girl seems to be.....SHE IS ONLY 4 OR 5!!! This really enrages me, and I hope that by now officials have tracked these parents down and have done something, anything about this situation. We can't let people get away with things like this. That little girl could have killed herself and the only people to blame would have been the parents for letting her drive in the first place. The child didn't know any better she probably just thought it was all fun and games because she had obviously done it before. Things like this make me not even want to know what is going on in the rest of the world.....we have enough do deal with in America, we don't need to be adding stresses like idiots in China or anywhere else that let their children behind the wheel at such a young age.

Schoolyard Bullies More Likely to Abuse Partners
Studies show that kids who bully other kids at school are more likely to abuse their partners. Out of 1500 men studied 16 percent abused their partner, at least once, in the past year. 38 percent of those men had been bullies in school. This has become more of a risk factor for men than other factors we tend to associate with the pasts of the people who commit domestic violence crimes. Authorities usually consider such factors before bullying: being abused as a child or witnessing abuse between parents. Psychologist Jay Silverman thinks that when it comes to kids bullying others at school, we need to start thinking of it as a sign of future domestic violence.
This article really makes sense if you think about it, why we have never really noticed it before baffles me. I can see where bullies grow up to be abusive, because most of the time they don't get the proper punishment so they grow up thinking they can get away with it. Our teachers and school officials need to be taking bullying way more seriously, because if we are the ones to help sculpt them into young adults shouldn't we be doing our very best? Instead of ISS or OSS as punishment for bullies, maybe we should consider bringing police to the school to explain what would happen if they were older and pulled the same stunts, and on top of that have them do some "community service" around the school during recess for a week. If cops can come to schools to talk about drugs why can't they come to talk about the origins of abuse and what happens to the abusers? People may read this and think, "man she is being dramatic about this" and yes maybe I am. However, my dramatic comments might bring my readers to also realize that this is a BIG issue and we do need to do way more to prevent this than we have been.

Tick-Borne Parasite Infects U.S. Blood Supply
Babesiosis is a tick-borne parasite that causes sever disease and even death. It can cause flu like symptoms and even organ failure. It has become more common in the past few years than it ever has been, and is infecting our blood supply. So far it has been said to be most common in the Northeast and Upper Midwest but has been caught in states as far away from there as Florida and Texas. Premature infants are the most vulnerable to this disease but not the only people who have been diagnosed. They say that there isn't yet a way to detect this disease before blood donations are made.
This is actually pretty scary. My family lives out in the country where ticks are an every day thing in the spring and summer time. It is especially scary since I have a 2 year old son who's immune system isn't fully developed yet. Most of the time this is spread by blood transfusions which makes me a little leery of our country's medical community. In the article that I am blogging about here it says that there is no way to detect this before blood donations, but it doesn't say that there is no way to detect this before blood transfusions. You would think that they would check the blood down to every last cell before expecting it to save someones life. To be transfusing blood with this parasite into premature babies just sickens me and brings me back to WHY DON'T WE CHECK THESE THINGS CLOSER?

New Swine Flu Strain Infects Two Young Children
New strain of the Swine Flu has been found in two children both under the age of five. A little girl from Pennsylvania and a little boy from Indiana were both hospitalized with sever flu like symptoms. After running their lab tests they found Influenza A combined with another gene from the H1N1 virus. Both of these children had been in contact with swine weeks prior to the hospital visits. They have both made a full recovery.
Obviously we need to make it to where the public can no longer come in contact with swine. They keep bringing terrible viruses to our communities that in the past have been deadly to some. We need to find some way to maybe test all pigs for these viruses and eliminate the risk of spreading it to people. You would think with all the technology in the world now days they would have already come up with something like this. It would save our country lots of money not having to pay for expensive vaccinations for these viruses if they are caught early on in the pigs.

Steven Seagal Denies Role in Dog's Death
The sources used to learn about this story state that a man named Jesus Sanchez Llovera is pressing charges against Steven Seagal and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio claiming that they killed his family dog. Seagal and the Sheriff both deny that incident took place during the raiding of Llovera's home. Sherri Arpaio says that if it were true at all there would be pictures to prove it with all the film crew there for the "Steven Seagal: Lawman" TV show. Not only did Llovera not have physical evidence but also waited five months after the raid to press charges.
It sounds to me that this Llovera guy is embarrassed about his publicly viewed home invasion by the Maricopa County police department, and now he's just making any excuse he can to try to get money out of Seagal. Everyone knows he is a very wealthy man and Llovera thinks he has a believable claim, but to press charges a whole five months later is a little suspicious to me.
We hear stupid stories like this all the time about people suing celebrities for random and ludicrous reasons. With all the failure you would think people would quit and just go out and make hard earned money like everyone else has to. People are becoming more and more lazy these days and it just really irks me that they expect to get through life that way.

Florida Police Kill Man With Toy Gun
Florida police reportedly gunned down a man carrying a toy rifle. Police got a number of calls reporting a man walking around with a rifle and aiming it at dogs. When police came to confront the man he acted in a way that made the police feel threatened and fire shots at the man. Only then did they realize that the gun was a fake. The family of the man told officials that the man was mentally disabled. The family also believes that it was wrong of the police to shoot the man.
I can agree with both parties on this story. Yes it was wrong of the police to kill a man for carrying a toy gun, and had they conversed with the man they would have realized that he was mentally disabled. They should have talked him into putting the gun down then arrested him. However, if the man aimed the gun at the police, threatened to shoot them, and refused to drop the gun, what other choice did the police have? Toy guns are made to look so real these days, maybe the makers of such toys should take this story into consideration of making toy guns look more like toys and not the real thing.
